Theatre Commons LA: Building an Inclusive, Thriving Hub for Los Angeles Theatre

In the wake of the LA Stage Alliance's dissolution in 2021, Los Angeles' vibrant theatre community faced an urgent need: a central hub to foster connection, provide resources, and champion the region’s diverse artistic voices. Theatre Commons LA emerged from this necessity—an inclusive coalition of theatre leaders and visionaries committed to advancing equity, collaboration, and innovation in LA’s theatre ecosystem during a time of great challenge and transformation.

OUR JOURNEY SO FAR 

• 3 Years of Collaborative Planning: Biweekly meetings with a professional facilitator funded by the Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative.

• Community Engagement: Input from a diverse group of theatre leaders across Los Angeles.

• Foundation for Growth: A vision and actionable plan for a sustainable, inclusive theatre service organization.

WHAT’S NEXT?

We have several ongoing projects that are slated to launch by Summer 2025 that are all dedicated to supporting Los Angeles Theatre. ​

• Field Mapping (ongoing, complete by January 2025) 

  • Building the first comprehensive database of theatre companies across Greater Los Angeles.

  • Collecting key data through a field mapping survey to shape future programming and advocacy efforts.

  • If you are in leadership at a theatre company please fill out this survey by Friday, January 31st. 

• Listing Website  (Launch: Summer 2025) 

  • A dynamic platform for theaters to showcase productions and engage new audiences.

  • Collaborative marketing campaigns to elevate the visibility of LA theatre.

• Community Events and Resource Databases (Starting Q1 2025)

  • Networking events to foster collaboration.

  • Accessible resources to empower theaters with technical tools, advocacy support, and operational knowledge.

• Advisory Board Recruitment (Q2 2025)

  • Expanding leadership with diverse voices to guide strategic initiatives.​​
